Spinning and Cycling
Benefits of spinning and cycling at your Local Studio/Club
Cardio. Some hate it, some love it, but we all need it. While some methods of cardio can get a little boring, some can be extremely addictive—Spinning, or Studio Cycling, falls under that category. Created in the 1980’s by an endurance athlete who wanted to find a way to train indoors year round, this low-impact workout has become one of the most popular group fitness classes out there. Spin class happens at a Fitness Studio with stationary bikes, which has various tension levels and inclines to simulate terrain and being on an outdoor bike, while challenging your muscles and creating a toned physique. The bike will track your progress throughout class letting you know how many calories you’re burning, giving you an extra boost of motivation to accomplish your fitness goals. A thirty minute workout can burn as much as 500 calories with longer ones burning upwards of 800 to 1,000 Calories. One of the best aspects of spinning? You control the workout by varying the intensity to your liking and skill level. Spin challenges your core, glutes, quads, and calve muscles; some classes incorporate an upper body strength portion by doing pushups over the handle bars or adding weights. Most include a stretch at the end of class, but be sure to do it on your own as well.
Want to try a class? Here’s what you need:
- Supportive fitness shoes or bike shoes with clips, if your health club has clip pedals (each studio is different, so be sure to reach out ahead of time to check! Most will have shoe rentals if they do use clips)
- Reusable Water Bottle.
- Towel (to wipe away sweat) Sweat-wicking, cycling-friendly clothing, such as bike shorts and tops—check out Sweaty Betty in Greenwich or Lululemon in Westport or Greenwich for some great options.
