“Amahl and the Night Visitors” Family Holiday Opera
December 8, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm$5 – $20
This December, Purchase Opera will present Gian Carlo Menotti’s beloved opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors.
Performances will be held at The Performing Arts Center Saturday, December 8, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 9, at 1 p.m. The one-act opera is performed in English in just under one hour without intermission.
According to Jacque Trussel, Director of Purchase Opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors is a perfect introduction to opera for all audiences, especially the young.
Originally commissioned for NBC television broadcast in 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors tells the story of Amahl, a curious young boy with an elaborate fantasy life, and his Mother, a poor widow struggling to find a way for them to survive. One night, three wondrous, otherworldly strangers appear at their door, laden with riches, and asking for shelter for the night. Awestruck and uncertain, the mother and her son invite them in to their humble home, unaware that their lives will forever be altered.
Amahl and the Night Visitors features students of the Conservatory of Music’s Voice and Opera Studies Area—a highly selective program that has won 14 top awards for its professional-level productions from the National Opera Association and the American Prize.
“We are thrilled to give our students the opportunity to perform this timeless piece, while at the same time providing the community with an approachable, world-class opera experience in a local venue,” Jacque Trussel said.
General admission tickets $20, $15 for seniors, and $5 for children. To order tickets, please visit www.artscenter.org or call 914.251.6200.
