OPEN HOUSE AND DEDICATION OF NEWLY-RENOVATED FIRST CHURCH MEETINGHOUSE
October 20 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pmFree
On Sunday, October 20, First Congregational Church of Church of Greenwich will be dedicating its new Meetinghouse (sanctuary) with a celebration that features a Connecticut Choral Festival Concert (performed by singers from church choir state-wide) on Saturday evening at 7:30 pm, and, on Sunday, an Open House that includes free food and a guided historical tour of the church. Everyone is welcome to join the First Church community in this joyful time of a new legacy unfolding.
Here’s a little history of First Church: The First Congregational of Church of Greenwich (originally known as the “First Church of Christ in Greenwich”) was created by an act of the General Court of the Colony of Connecticut in May 1665. In 1667, a newly built schoolhouse became the place of worship.
Built on the current site, the stone “Meetinghouse”, dedicated in 1895, was the fourth one built to house the congregation. This was an adaptation of a Norman-Gothic structure built in England circa 1100. The building was expanded in 1930 with the construction of the June Binney Memorial Parish House. The Education wing was added in 1952 and the Meetinghouse enlarged in 1960-1962. As the congregation grew and needs changed, the physical space was adapted to serve the programs.
The recently completed renovations have been undertaken to address the growing needs of the members, friends, and the larger community. This five-month renovation project in their Meetinghouse (sanctuary), contracted through Allen Ross Architecture LLC, Pimpinella Construction, Vogue Electric, Inc., Fidaleo Masonry LLC, Gro-Pro Landscaping, and Sound Stage Systems, included new flooring, seating, lighting and sound upgrades, the installation of a new electrical system, plus an expanded narthex with full accessibility to the outdoor Memory Garden area. Thanks to the new flooring, insulation and sound system, the acoustics of the Meetinghouse have improved immensely. The new lighting allows for optimal photography of any event. First Church opted for flexible seating that can be re-arranged or eliminated completely to accommodate various types of worship services, concerts and social events.
This new space is available for rental for public and community events, such as receptions, fundraisers and weddings. Please call the Church at (203) 637-1791 or contact email@example.com.
Throughout the years, First Church has provided an opportunity for worship, programs to address a variety of needs and concerns, and a meeting place for many local organizations. Located across from Binney Park in Old Greenwich, it is truly a “Community Church”. For more information on First Church, please visit our website at www.fccog.org.
First Church is an open and affirming church affiliated with the United Church of Christ (UCC). It is fully accessible and parking is located behind the church, entering off of Forest Avenue.
