New Exhibit: All Together
This autumn the Flinn Gallery takes a fresh look at still life in All Together, opening October 25th and running through December 5th, 2018. Our choice of plants and pottery, the way we arrange our furniture, the cultural markers of coffee cups and chocolate bars, and the symbolic nature of vases are explored. Artists Kate Gilmore, Karen Lederer, Polly Shindler, Paul Wackers, and Alex Yudzon combine humor and formal rigor to examine the importance and meaning of objects placed together in a show curated by Tracy McKenna. “Over the last few years I started noticing more artists exploring traditional genre paintings: the return of figuration and still life both featured prominently but with new, contemporary twists. Abstract interventions and invented spaces have replaced classic compositions. We all surround ourselves with mementoes from our families and travels—it’s a relatable subject,” says curator Tracy McKenna. Karen Lederer’s painted tablescapes function as self-portraits, depicting objects from her New York City childhood: William the Hippo, bodega cups, branded beverages, and art historical references to Picasso and Matisse. “I dot the paintings with products I have around the studio. With many of these choices I poke fun at a hipster consumer culture in which I […]

On November 3rd, Heather Gaudio Fine Art is set to open “Room for Play,” a group exhibition featuring works by Ellen Carey, Deborah Kass, Robert Sagerman and Andrés Schiavo. The show will run through January 5th, and a public reception will be held on November 30th, 5-7pm, to coincide with the New Canaan Holiday Stroll. The artists in this exhibition are working with imaginative and distinct processes to create colorful and engaging visual experiences. Ellen Carey has been a groundbreaking experimental photographer for several decades, producing abstract images through the use of lens-based and camera-less methods. The show will feature her innovative one-of-a-kind “Caesura” photograms from the “Dings and Shadows” series created in light-tight rooms, a technique that harks back to the 19th Century when photography was in its nascent stages. Carey propels this medium to the 21st Century with her imagery, where a striking array of colors become the subject and the object of the artwork. Deborah Kass also acknowledges art historical forebears such as Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha in works that appropriate and reclaim imagery and linguistics. She is known for unabashed expressions and a tongue-in-cheek audacity that are social and cultural commentaries, exemplified in the text-based […]

New exhibition: November 16 – December 22, 2018 Reception: Friday evening, November 16, 6:30 – 8:00, public invited Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 – 5:30 and by appointment For New York artist Gary Cruz, the creative process begins with the camera on his phone. This exhibition focuses on The Wholesalers series and is based on images taken while wandering the garment and flower districts of New York City. The photographs have their origins in the dizzying abundance of offerings spilling over onto sidewalks, crowded into storefronts and overflowing shops, and on the urban landscape reflected in their glass windows. In stark contrast to the immediacy and spontaneity of a camera phone, the work in the studio is a slow and deliberate editing process. Each image is digitally manipulated; its forms and colors are pushed, pulled, fragmented, swirled and swiped using an array of computer programs and applications. Trained as an architect and designer, Cruz has a particular interest in creating and conflating depth within the pictorial plane. The final images compress space; back is front, outside is inside. Past, present and future coexist simultaneously, space is ambiguous. The works embody the duality of contemporary photographic techniques and the tradition […]
Find out more »The World Alongside Ours: Eve Stockton
Reception: Friday evening, November 16, 6:30 – 8:00, public invited Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 – 5:30 and by appointment Kenise Barnes Fine Art is pleased to present The World Alongside Ours, an exhibition of printed and hand-colored large-scale woodblock prints by contemporary artist Eve Stockton. This is the artist’s third solo show with the gallery who has represented her since 2012. Nature is the ultimate creator and a limitless well-spring of inspiration. It is the most often sited influence and catalyst for artists. Nature based artwork persists as the most loved and collected genre. Eve Stockton’s work has always been part of this time-honored continuum. In the artist’s own words: “When I step outside inspiration is everywhere. Nature’s variety and wonders are humbling. How does one capture the evanescent moments of fast-moving clouds, light through the trees or the bursting forth of new life? My images are an attempt to express just such phenomena.” Stockton spends most summer days surrounded by nature, skillfully carving three-foot wood blocks in a remote Canadian cabin. Each hand-carved block is inked and printed on Coventry rag paper. A print is often re-inked and layered with other blocks to create a complex symphony […]
